Deer in a FieldChanco is located on a bio-diverse tract of land that provides a host of experiential educational opportunities that have been developed into our ‘Living Classroom’ program. The James River is teaming with organisms, fish, and tidal cycles that spark a student’s imagination. The hardwood forest is host to microorganisms, fern, fauna, and animal specimens to be discovered in a living laboratory. Chanco is developing an interdependent farm system incorporating an heirloom garden, composting, and domesticated animals to create home grown herbs for the kitchen. Students can spend hours learning how each component of this system supports one another in an interdependent ecosystem. Chanco plans to partner with local environmental groups like the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), and others to be able to provide S.O.L approved curriculums ‘living classroom’ program.

Chanco on the James is now making a public pledge to conserve water and energy, maintain our natural setting, reduce waste, recycle materials, and make environmentally conscientious food preparation and disposal decisions. Our “Green” environmental impact statement commits to over two dozen specific eco-policies, each one carefully balanced against business demands and standards to leave a light footprint on the earth.
