The Junior Olympic swimming pool, ropes challenge course, zip-lines, canoes, kayaks, and sail boats can add fun and recreation to all those who stay at this unique conference center. Additionally, bicycles, archery range, volleyball, and half basketball court add to the list of amenities available. There is plenty of room to go for a jog or organize a pickup game of football, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, or Bocce Ball in a grassy field or on the sandy beach.

Climb high on the Chanco Challenge and Initiatives Course, with a series of adventures to safely challenge and thrill all age groups. Built by the William & Mary College Recreation Department, Chanco hails as one of the premiere ropes courses in the State of Virginia. Youth groups, student tour groups, family reunions, alumni reunions, and corporate groups have stayed at Chanco specifically for our Challenge Course.

Located on 125 scenic wooded acres on the river, the peaceful atmosphere of Chanco on the James may enable you to see deer, wild turkeys, red fox, and other wildlife native to this area. Birdwatchers will enjoy the many species of wild birds, including the return of the bald eagles to our property. Even if you do not enjoy walks in the woods or strolls on the beach, everyone who sees the golden sun on the river will marvel at the beauty and charm of this private resort.

Local attractions include Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, James River Plantations, Busch Gardens, Water Country USA, Smith's Fort, Chippokes Plantation State Park, Bacon's Castle, Carter's Grove Plantation, The Pottery Factory in Lightfoot, and the Miles Carpenter Museum in Waverly. From student groups to elder hostels, many use our facilities as a base camp to tour the many historic and regional treasures that are all around us. A short ferry ride takes you to some of the nation's richest historical sites and fun attractions.
